What Do I Need to Know?
- Tankless units should be mounted to a wall with appropriate clearance around all sides. Proper installation depends upon several factors, from climate and building codes to venting requirements.
- For gas applications, most homes are equipped with a ½” " gas line; tankless requires a ¾” " gas line. Re-fitting and installing gas lines when replacing tank units is extremely costly, and may run as much as $1,200.
- One of the key concerns with tankless installation is the venting requirements. Especially in replacement situations, venting changes may require a substantial retrofit cost. Tankless requires special stainless venting due to extremely high exhaust temperatures.
With only slightly more efficient operations and annual savings, plus the higher purchase cost and installation cost, the payback of tankless is longer than most homeowners are comfortable with (possibly 20 years).
